STORY
When Ezra’s boyfriend, Julian, contracts Sugarcoat Syndrome—a mysterious illness turning queer people into candy—Julian becomes a viral sensation, documenting his sweet, rotting body for a captivated audience. But as the illness progresses, their fans become dangerously hungry for much more. Caught between love and spectacle, Ezra must decide how much he’s willing to give away to try to save the person he loves most. Sweetheart is the collaborative effort of an insanely passionate team of American Film Institute Conservatory Fellows dedicated to telling a bold and meaningful story. Multiple members of our team identify as LGBTQ+ and the rest are in service to the story as allies. As emerging filmmakers, we are committed to crafting a visually striking AND emotionally potent film that reflects our shared vision and creative discipline.
